Cato Clowney Jr. was born March 24, 1935, in Tipton County, Mason Tennessee to Cato Clowney, Sr., and Louvenia Terry Clowney. He was married to Shirley Carr Clowney for 64 years. He departed this life on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at University Tennessee Medical Center Hospice Unit.
He was proceeded in death by daughter Ramona Lisa Brown and grandson, Marcus Grant Clowney. He leaves to mourn his wife Shirley Migyonne Clowney, sons Edwin Lamarr (Mary Ann) and Cato (Ray), brother Johnny Mack (Gloria), and sister Beatrice Taborn. Son-in-law Wayne A. Brown, granddaughters Tia (husband Reggie), Elana (Jason) grandson Christopher (Julienna), Courtney (Eric and daughter), Jared, several great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Patricia, Thelma, and Odessa, and several nieces, nephews and many cousins and friends.
Cato was an avid collector of African Art and was best known for his documentation of the history of The Negro Baseball League. He has displayed his collection at the Blount County Library, Blount County Museum, Beck Cultural Center, The Literacy Imperative, Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport Concourse, and Walter State Community College.
Cato retired from the Kmart Corporation and Proffitt’s/Sax Fifth Ave as a merchandiser. Cato was a very giving person. He had a green thumb and grew both assorted vegetables and flowers.
The family will receive friends from 2 – 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 178 Bessie Harvey Ave. Alcoa, with memorial service to follow with Rev. Dr. Kelley Miller Smith, Jr. officiating. Entombment, Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grandview Cemetery, Maryville. Final arrangements entrusted to Foothills Funeral Home. www.foothillsfh.com
