James Leroy Black

July 28, 1948 — November 22, 2023

James Black, 75, of Rockford, TN went home to Jesus surrounded by loved ones on November 22nd, 2023 after a difficult battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

James was born on July 28th, 1948 to Leroy and Beulah Black in Knoxville, TN. After graduating from Charles M. Hall in 1966, he went on to join the United States Army in 1968 and served in the Vietnam War.

In March 1970, James met his wife of 53 years, Beverly Black, in Hampton, VA. They fell in love almost instantly and were lifelong partners. James and Beverly chose to settle in his hometown of Alcoa, TN. After which, he began working for Delta Airlines, March 1, 1972 until his retirement in 2008. He also was a faithful employee of Foothills Funeral Home for 32 years.

James was a passionate craftsman, if James was not sharing his love of God, you could catch him in his workshop during his time off, working on gifts for family and friends. James also had a passion for fishing and barbecuing. He briefly owned JB’s Ribs & More sharing his skills with his community. He was a devoted member and deacon of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Alcoa for over 50 years. Being of service wherever there was a need to the church and its members.

James was an example of a man driven by his purpose and faith in God. He would always challenge those around him to be the best version of themselves. Though he had a tough exterior, his heart was of gold. He would never hesitate to give his last to someone in need.
James joins his mother and father, Beulah and Leroy, in Heaven. Also preceding him in death is his sister, Lottie, “Lucille” and loyal pet Pomeranian, Bentley. He is survived by his wife, Beverly, his sister, Sandra, his brother, Waymon “Kenny” and his wife, Lola. His children, Michael, daughters, Janika “Nikki” and Jennifer and sons William “Homer” and William “Ba”. Grandchildren, William “Daimon” (Ashley), Mia, James “Rashad”, Skylar and Keirran “Ahmad” and great-grandchildren Alyssa and Blaize. Very special Cousin Horace “Bam” Johnson,  Godson, C J Dean, Goddaughter, Kashira Henry and special brother-in-law Charles Graham.

James was loved by so many. His positive outlook, generous spirit, and kind heart left an impression wherever he went. He never met a stranger that didn't quickly become a friend; he always went out of his way to help anyone in need and had an incredible work ethic that will forever be remembered.

Receiving of friends will be Tuesday November 28, 2023 at 1:00pm at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Alcoa with funeral to follow at 2:00pm. Interment Wednesday November 29, 2023 at 10:00am at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery,John Sevier Highway, Knoxville. The body may be viewed from Noon until 6:00 pm on Monday.
