Sergeant First Class (Retired) Obie W.  Yeary Jr. was born September 1, 1958, to the union of Obie W. Yeary Sr. and Inez G. Yeary.  He departed this life on September 30, 2023.  He grew up in Morristown, TN, and accepted Christ at an early age.  During his teenage years, he developed a love of martial arts and over the years received an assortment of awards, trophies, and belts.

Though a native son of Morristown, TN, he was a long-term resident of Hinesville, GA. His love of martial arts, BBQ, and genuine smile will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

After 22 years of dedicated service in the United States Army, he retired from the 24th Finance Battalion, VICTORY PAYMASTERS, Ft Stewart, GA, in 1999. He took immense pride in his years of service and contributions to his country. He was known as “the Snake Killer,” while serving in Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  His overseas tours of duty/deployments include Germany, Operation “Just Cause" (Panama), Desert Shield, and Desert Storm. He earned a myriad of awards, medals, and badges during his Army career including airborne, air assault, and sharpshooter.

He also received several civilian service awards, academic certificates, and degrees.

He was preceded in death by his father, Obie Yeary Sr. mother, Inez Yeary, and brother Terry A. Yeary.

He leaves to cherish his memory:  Sons:   Obie W. Yeary III, Atlanta, GA; U.S. Navy Lieutenant Jared A. Yeary, (Kristilyn), VA Beach, VA; and Jacob S. Yeary (Christina), Evans Mills, NY.  Siblings:  Rosa Fair, Cleveland OH; Conrad Yeary, Asheville, NC; Verna Wells, Charlotte, NC; Sharon Williams (Clarence), Louisville, TN; Patricia Yeary, Columbia, SC; Elisha Yeary (Teresa), St Augustine, FL; David Yeary, Dunn, NC; Robyn Pickett (Therence), Greensboro, NC; Antonio Yeary, Johnson City, TN; and sister-in-law Lethia Yeary, Morristown, TN. He leaves 10 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

The Celebration of Life will be held on October 29, 2023, at the Dockery-Senter Funeral Home Chapel, Morristown, TN. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm – 2:30 pm with services immediately following.  He will be laid to rest with military honors in the Yeary cemetery, Morristown, TN.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Disabled American Veterans in memory of SFC Obie W.
